Information and Explanation

The Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)

It has happened to us all - we have finished typing a letter or completing important work and, for some reason, the electricity fails just before our data has been saved.

Power black-outs, brown-outs and spikes not only cause inconvenience when data is lost, they can also cause serious damage to electronic equipment - from a blown power supply to a failed hard disk.

How can this be guarded against?
One method is the uninterruptable power supply (UPS). These have historically protected business' file servers and mission critical systems, but are now available at a price to suit the home user.

They sit between your equipment and the mains electricity plug, and work by storing electricity in large batteries. The electronics within them constantly measure the quality of the mains electricity and whether it is too high or too low, it will make adjustments so that the power reaching your connected devices is correct and constant. In the event of a mains power failure the UPS switched immediately to battery power, giving you enough time to finish your work, save it and close the systems down safely.

Many UPS products also have a protection system to guard you modem against lightning strikes.

The uses for a UPS do not end with your computer equipment. They can be used to power your television and/or video recorder so you never have to miss a programme or football match again!

Wardlaw Surveys can help you select the right UPS for your needs. Prices start from as little as £50 (inc VAT).
